Making the world's railways safer
Sperry Rail partnered with Steamhaus and AWS to accelerate and de-risk their Digital Transformation journey. Together we are building industry leading, Cloud Native products, unlocking the true value of their data, automating analysis, and ensuring safer more reliable railways.
Migrating and modernising business critical systems
Founded in 1928, Sperry Rail is known worldwide for its ‘non-destructive’ method of testing the health of rail tracks. Headquartered in Connecticut, USA, with an innovation team based in Derby, UK, the company wanted to fundamentally change its operations. It wanted to modernise how it delivers value to its customers, by placing data at the core of its business offering.
We were engaged to lead a major, multi-year program of work to migrate and modernise Sperry’s business critical services. As part of this project, we were also tasked with running an upskilling programme with Sperry Rail’s internal team to support its use of cloud tools and processes – with the aim of enabling a culture of innovation within the organisation.
Cloud Native Transformation
This programme of work has been delivered in three phases. The first phase began with an AWS Well-Architected Review of Sperry’s AI prototype Elmer. This review led to a fundamental redesign and build of a new serverless, event-driven architecture.
Phase two involved a review of the services that integrate with Elmer, leading to a multi-year engagement focussed on redesigning a number of Sperry’s applications and business processes. During this process, we leveraged AWS technologies and managed data solutions to create a suite of new, integrated products that are transforming the collection, processing and analysis of data across the business.
Phase three is a continuation of the modernisation programme of work, but also has a focus on team enablement and upskilling Sperry’s teams, including creating an internal Cloud Native Centre of Excellence, via the AWS Cloud Native Accelerator programme. This workstream is ensuring the business is fully equipped to run new products and continuously iterate, in accordance with best-practice and enterprise scale standards for security, resilience and cost-efficiency.
Efficient data analytics
The solution we built for Sperry provided a 50% reduction in false positives, enabling analysts to make informed recommendations based on areas of concern identified by AWS AI services.
Furthermore, the migration to AWS and the adoption of cloud native services reduced the TCO of the solution by over 35% compared to on-premise, resulting in a secure, reliable and highly cost effective solution.
